10 - Tragic Incident at Union Dry Dock

I just arrived in Puerto Rico and opened my mail to the heartbreaking news of the fatal shooting that occurred last weekend at Union Dry Dock (a secured site).

I have since been briefed by the city and spoken with Police Chief Aguiar.

The shooter is in custody, and authorities have stated that "there is no current need to divert existing resources to the affected area"—police speak for indicating there is no ongoing threat to the community.
While not yet officially confirmed, the two young men involved, both from Passaic, were believed to be known to each other. I mention this because, while all violent crime is deeply concerning, targeted violence feels different from random acts of violence when assessing community safety. That said, I know we all agree—no one wants violence of any kind in our neighborhood.

The Hudson County Prosecutor issued a statement saying they were initially tipped off about the shooting on Sunday, February 2nd.  And upon further investigation they issued a warrant for the suspect on Thursday when it was discovered he was already being held by police for different reasons in Garfield NJ.

I often receive texts, emails, and calls from residents who hear something suspicious, but in this case, I was in town and did not receive any outreach at the time. If anyone saw or heard anything that night, I encourage you to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office at 201-915-1345.  At any other time, as the saying goes "if you see or hear somethg, say something" and call Hoboken PD at 201-420-2100/

Please join me in extending our deepest condolences to the family of the 23-year-old victim in this tragic crime.

As always, please share this with everyone you know who may be interested and reach out any time on any issue important to you: 201-208-1674 or [email protected].
