Midday Monday Blizzard Watch

walked around the 2nd ward this morning and it is both beautiful, but importantly, treacherous out there.

Most sidewalks are not shoveled because we are still mid-blizzard.

Around the big buildings like Hudson Tea, Shipyard and Maxwell, the sidewalks have been cleared.  A shout out to Applied / Ironstate who have done a great job clearing sidewalks in front of their buildings on the side streets AND along the waterfront.

This said - the administration is reporting downed trees and large branches.  Because of the weight of this snow, in my experience, this risk will continue over the next couple of days.  Making walking along tree lined streets dangerous.

What you need to know:

  • The local Hoboken travel ban is in effect until at least 4pm today that HPD are enforcing.  In addition to the snow that is continuing to fall, this is also to address the falling branches and trees.  Emergency travel of course is exempted.

  • Sidewalk snow removal is required 6 hours after the storm ends.  As of this writing my personal guess is that it looks to be around 2 or 3 that the 6pm clock will start (revised from the 1pm I suggested yesterday).  I have asked the city to send out an alert as and when the storm is considered ended.

  • Sunday’s trash pick up is currently re-scheduled for tonight, however this is subject to change.

  • Municipal garages remain full except for monthly and permit holders.  No additional discounted parking is available at this time.

  • Transit disrupted:

    • NJ Transit services are still suspended.

    • PATH service to and from 33rd will remain available, but delayed.  Check with the Ride The PATH app.

    • NYWW - 14th Street service suspended according to NYWW App.

  • Power outages and downed trees.

    • Report downed wires and power outages to PSEG: ONLINE HERE.  Or you can report power outages by texting “Out” to 47734 or calling 1-800-436-PSEG

    • Report downed trees and large limbs to the Hoboken Fire Department at (201) 420-2004.  I reported a limb down and hanging on a wire at 12:24 today and they had it removed - not kidding - by 12:41. FTW! #TEAMWORKMAKESTHEDREAMWORK

  • Make sure phones and devices are fully charged

  • Walking surfaces are extremely dangerous due to the weight of the snow.  It is the kind of snow that sticks to your soles.  Walk slowly, and like a duck, to avoid slipping and falling.

  • The City Council meeting at 7pm Monday night will be moved to virtual.  You can watch / join via zoom or watch via Hoboken’s YouTube page.

  • Because of the state of emergency, no parking is allowed on the following Emergency Snow Routes.  Vehicles left on these streets during the state of emergency may be ticketed and towed.

    • Washington Street: Both Sides

    • 3rd Street: North Side; Jackson to River

    • 4th Street:  South Side; River to Jackson

    • 5th Street: South Side; Clinton to River

    • 9th Street: North Side; Jackson to Castle Point Terrace

    • 13th Street: North Side; Washington to Madison

    • 13th Street: South Side; Washington Street to Hudson

    • Willow: West Side; Observer Highway to 11th (County Road)

    • Observer Highway: Both Sides; Henderson to Hudson (County Road)

    • Please also note that temporary no parking signs are posted on the east side of Grand Street between Third and Eighth Streets (in red on map below), and vehicles must be moved from this area as well.

  • Street sweeping is suspended today and Tuesday.

  • Citi Bike has suspended services through Tuesday morning, 6am.

  • How can I volunteer if I don’t have a shovel… As your neighbors / friends if they have one you can borrow.  If you have one to lend jump on social media and let people know.

  • Out of town property owners who want to come in and shovel, concerned about travel ban.  I have advised that they wait until after the travel ban has been lifted.

REMINDER: For emergencies, call 911 or 201-420-2100 for the local dispatch.  And email [email protected] and report any areas that have not been adequately cleared.

While I have you.  I have heard from a couple of neighbors concerned about family in or near Puerto Vallarta Mexico, where there is a string of violence occurring following the killing of a top drug cartel leader.  If you are in need of assistance regarding this, please reach out to Rep. Menendez’s office at 201-309-0301 and they will do what they can to help.

In addition to the amount of snow, it has been interesting to see the effects of the wind last night.  This is a picture of the south side of the Hudson Tea, that faces the inner courtyard.  Snow is literally stuck to the windows and the building across the first few floors.  First time in the 25 years I have lived here that I have seen this…

Stay safe out there Hoboken.  Check in on your neighbors.  Especially those who are older or disabled.  Do not hesitate to reach out to discuss this or anything else important to you.  My number is 201-208-1674.  #ItTakesAVillage
