5-#MOREVOICES Newsletter Amazing News & Frustrating Updates

First, the amazing news: 15th Street is reopened!

Woohoo! Isn’t this the prettiest ugly intersection you’ve seen in a while?
Thank you all for your patience over the past four months! With this milestone complete, the Rebuild by Design (RBD) project now moves to Bloomfield Street, where assembly will begin as early as next week.
What to expect next:
  • Bloomfield between 14th & 15th Streets will be closed to traffic and parking beginning next week.
  • small portion just north of 14th will remain open for two-way traffic to allow access to the St. Louis building’s residential parking garage.
  • Temporary traffic light: The County will install a light at Bloomfield & 14th to manage traffic exiting the garage.

Now, the frustrating news.

PATH service to 33rd Street shuts down tonight at midnight.

The 14th Street Ferry Terminal will not have as many additional ferries as previously communicated.
I know... Over the past few weeks, we were told multiple times in writing that:
  • Both ferry routes (to Midtown & Downtown/Brookfield) would run every 10 minutes, doubling Midtown capacity and tripling Brookfield service.
  • This information was shared on the Port Authority website, through Nixle alerts, and in my newsletters, social media posts, and postcards.
On Tuesday night, a neighbor who spoke with an NY Waterway employee mentioned that the ferry schedule might not match what had been publicly shared. After following up, we learned that there had been a miscommunication—NY Waterway had not actually planned to add more ferries to either route from the 14th Street terminal.

Since then, I and Vijay Chaudhuri, the mayor’s chief of staff, have been working with the Port Authority to push for more ferry service. The Port AUthority, who have been very responsive and helpful, were at least able to secure additional capacity for the Downtown/Brookfield route, which is the most in-demand. Many uptown residents who previously took shuttles to the PATH terminal will likely now take the ferry instead.

I know this is frustrating. No one is more disappointed than I am. Since November, when the City Council was first briefed on the PATH shutdown, I’ve been focused on ensuring we had additional ferry service at 14th Street and extra 126 buses (which we did secure).

I’ll be at the ferry terminal tomorrow and over the next few commuting mornings—answering questions, monitoring the situation, and continuing to push for better service.

For Tomorrow (Friday, Jan 31st):
  • The 14th Street ferry schedule remains the same—additional Brookfield ferries start Monday.
  • The NJ Transit Terminal Downtown ferries to Midtown & Brookfield will run every 10 minutes during peak hours.
Check NY Waterway’s schedules for updates.
