Day 6 of the PATH closing is behind us, and it had a little more challenges.
This will be the last update I will send until next week, if still needed. I will incorporate into broader newsletters. Thank you for all who have reached out and said you miss them!
Still big crowds, though slightly less at the ferry, but I hear way more people on the light rail and PATH from Newport. I was again out at the 14th Street Ferry Terminal and have been collecting feedback from people via email, text and social media all day about their experience. Keep the input coming - I am channeling it ot PANYNJ and NYWW and we've watched all agencies responding and adapting. They have eyes on everything, but it is better to hear directly from those traveling. I will continue to keep my webpage updated with all of this and other current information during the PATH closure. PATH STATION CLOSURE - Tiffanie for Hoboken
A FEW THOUGHTS FOR THURSDAY
- It's going to be a messy and cold mornng with the expected snow during peak commuting hours. If you can stay home, do.
- If you can't stay home, try to go in earlier or later as most of the pain points seem to be between 8 and 9.
- The bus remains the option with the least complaints, so if it can work for your commute, I encourage you to take it.
- NYWW are hoping to have additional capacity for the midtown ferry from 14th between 8 & 9 on Tuesday, with expectation of tomorrow and Friday with lower ridership.
- If you are traveling with a child or have a teen traveling alone to Pier 11 - please go to the NYWW agent and ask to be in the front of the line. I have let NYWW know to have their staff make sure that kids going to school make the ferries.
- I will be at 14th, but only until 830. I will be on my way to Puerto Rico for sunshine and a long weekend on Friday! (sorry to rub it in...)
Day 6 From 14th Street:
-
Midtown ferries during the peakest of the peak hours were a disaster. 823 didn't come, those in line got on the 8:43 (with those who came for the 8:43), and the 9:03 was late. And did I say it was freezing cold? This was due to two things:
- although the ferries have capacity, the large crowds take a long time to get on and off the boat and
- they had challenges getting enough crews to operate the boats.
- NYWW are trying to add capacity to the midtown lines - either getting more ferries and / or move up to two of the 5 Brookfield only boats to the midtown line. I was just told this will be in place on Tuesday (next high volume day).
- Pier 11 8:28 Pinch Point resolved: For the 828 ferry to Pier 11, we asked people to get in two lines and let Pier 11 passengers on first, followed by the Brookfield ones. The driver of the boat even announced this when they got there. Everyone got on.
MESSAGES I AM FOLLOWING UP WITH PANYNJ & NYWW
- Newport PATH Station - leak status?
- 39th Street Terminal - Long 14th street lines, empty boats to downtown
- Improve timing of NYWW alerts
- Issues with PATH Uber discount
SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES - SPECIFIC FEEDBACK REQUEST:
- NYC Ferry buses – both terminals, morning and evening
- Light rail - yesterday's gem, today's... opposite of gem.
After today, one week down, 2.5 to go. A huge thank you for your patience. Know that not only am I listening, but PANYNJ and NYWW are as well. I have not spoken to NJT about the Light Rail yet, but will. I remain impressed by everyone's commitment to improving service - including passengers - as if everyone is paddling in the same direction (even though there has been some rough waters). And please keep sharing your feedback.
As always, please share this with everyone you know who may be interested and reach out any time on any issue important to you: 201-208-1674 or [email protected].
