#12 More Voices Newsletter - CAPS Tomorrow Night!

I hope wherever you were, you had a great Total Eclipse 2024 experience.

I was lucky to be in Rochester with my family where we experienced the Totality.  Although there was full cloud coverage so we could not see the corona ring around the sun, we did get full darkness at 3:23 pm which was actually pretty incredible.

There are a million things I want and need to tell you, but will have to save that for the next More Voices newsletter.  This one is brief, and just includes some time sensitive updates.

WEDNESDAY APRIL 10TH
2ND WARD COMMUNITY & PUBLIC SAFETY (CAPS) MEETING

I am so excited that the successful CAPS program is finally making it back to the 2nd ward with a time and location that hopefully is convenient for many!  So make me proud neighbors (including 5th Ward neighbors) and lets set a record for attendance! (I am very competitive about this event…)
Come with questions for Hoboken PD (recent crimes and upcoming silly season…), Fire (what to do in a high rise building if the fire alarm goes off), OEM (event mgmt. and community emergencies), Ambulance (where does the ambulance take you), Health Department (rats!) and CERT (volunteering).  Refreshments provided.  But come hungry and thirsty and grab a beer from Shep’s incredible beer selection and have dinner from their extensive food menu (I recommend the wings!)!  Happy hour is 4-7 with $5 beer and wine and 2 for 1 cocktails!  I will be there at 5:30 if anyone wants to come meet with me first.

FREE YOUTH FLAG FOOTBAL PROGRAM
NEEDS MORE $$$ FOR RECORD BREAKING ENROLLMENT

Community Lifestyle, one of my favorite organizations in Hoboken that provides free recreational programs to youth in Hoboken, is about to start their spring Flag Football league!  And they had a RECORD BREAKING year with over 600 youth signing up.  This exceeded their expected attendance of 500 so they are now seeking an additional $6,500 in donations to cover the increased expenses for what are 10 additional teams.  You can help by sponsoring one child, one team, one conference or anything in between!

The sponsorship will greatly contribute to managing logistics, equipment and uniforms needed for the season.  To learn more: Sponsorship Opportunity – Community Lifestyle

From Louis Quinones, the founder and CEO “This surge in enrollment highlights the role this program plays in promoting a sense of community, teamwork and healthy lifestyles for children in Hoboken.  By sponsoring a team you not only support a cause, but also gain exposure within our community with your logo prominently featured on uniforms, event banners and other promotional materials.”

THE 2024 HOBOKEN BUDGET & YOUR TAXES

At the recent City Council meeting, Mayor Bhalla presented his 2024 proposed Municipal budget with a hefty 6% tax increase. However, his administration failed to provide the budget to the Council or the public for review until just hours before the meeting. Instead, they prioritized a misleading press release boasting about a "balanced" budget, which is simply a statutory requirement, clearly aimed at garnering media attention rather than facilitating public review.

Due to the rushed nature of the process and the significant tax hike proposed, myself and four other Council members (Giattino, Presinzano, Ramos, and Russo) voted against introducing the budget. We need more time to thoroughly understand this crucial starting point for our budget discussions.

I urge you to attend the upcoming budget workshops, where we anticipate the budget will be introduced prior to the session on the 15th. Your engagement in this process is vital as we navigate these important financial decisions for our city.  Here is the zoom link to participate in the budget workshops.  I have not yet confirmed but have asked that they be videoed and available on the city’s FB and YouTube pages:  VIA ZOOM

I will try to get one more newsletter out this week with the other 999,997 things I want to tell you.  Also, in my last newsletter about democracy in NJ, I used a play on words about Good Friday.  I received feedback from a handful of neighbors that were offended given the importance of this day for those who observe Christian faiths.  I imagine there were others as well so please accept my apologies if my word choice offended you in any way.

As always, please share this with everyone you know who may be interested and reach out any time on any issue important to you: 201-208-1764 or [email protected].  Click to subscribe to my newsletter.
