Tonight the community is gathering to mourn the loss of the young man who was shot and killed overnight Sunday.
I hope you can join to show your support. I did not know Damon personally, but I know many who did, and who knew his family and the amazing man he had become. According to all of the social media posts, he was a role model and mentor for youth in our community. This FB post by the Chair of the HHA creates a vivid picture of the loss our community is feeling.
If you have not been to a balloon rising, it is a beautiful event where the feeling of community is never greater. It is so unfortunate that these tragic circumstances are the reason for them.
The murder is being investigated by the Hudson County Prosecutor and Hoboken Police. A news article indicates that it was a dispute between two people and the person who killed Damon is known.
As we say each time someone is killed by guns... these tragedies are avoidable. Killing by gun is cowardly - it is fast, can be done from afar, and doesn't require the shooter to have to feel the pain of the person being killed. It is cowards' access to guns that kills. We need to do more to stop this from happening. We need people in legislative roles willing to do more to stop this from happening. Vote... as if your life, or someone else's life, depends on it.
My heart goes out to Damon's family and those close to him. May his memory be a blessing to all who loved him.
