#30 UPTOWN TRAFFIC & SPECIAL MEETING

The traffic nightmare that occurred yesterday uptown relates to the Park Avenue repaving project that is being run by Hudson County (Park, Garden and Willow are all County Roads - FYI).

I am having flashbacks to the nightmares of when the Park Ave and Willow Ave bridges were repaired 7 years ago.... #IYKYK.  Here are some updates for you to factor into your travel plans today:
  • Expect more traffic disruptions today as work will be performed at the corner of 15th and Park.  This work involves the upgrade of the drainage at that intersection to improve the flooding that happens there during any rain storm.
  • Avoid this area if possible as you enter and exit Hoboken.  While this work is performed, it is expected that
    • Park Ave will be closed northbound between 14th and 16th, and
    • 15th will be closed between Garden and 15th.
  • Willow Ave north will be open, and will bare the brunt of the increased traffic to exit Hoboken on the North End.
  • I spoke with our Public Safety and OEM leaders about the traffic circulation in the area and asked that they put signs / officers at 14th and Sinatra, Washington and Bloomfield to direct traffic away from heading towards 15th to exit Hoboken.  With this in mind, use alternative routes including Willow Ave and the Viaduct, to exit the city on the north end as smoothly as possible.
  • If you have flexibility, plan to your travel to be later in the day.  Yesterday the work ended at 4pm and the streets were opened.
  • I have asked the administration to send an updated Nixle to alert residents of the work plans for the duration of the project which will go until next week.  For the north end, I believe the disruptive work after today is limited to the actual paving which should happen later next week.  The city provides daily updates on social media to get the most current information.

SPECIAL CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT

While I have your attention, tonight there will be a special City Council meeting at 7pm (via Zoom).  The City Council will be voting to introduce an amendment to our Rent Control Ordinance that if approved, will be in lieu of the referendum initiative (ballot question) being put forth by the landlord group Mile Square Taxpayers' Association that would significantly weaken the effects of our rent control laws.  There will be a public hearing on this at a further special meeting on or around August 5th (still to be scheduled).
