“JULY 4TH” BARRIERS ALONG SINATRA DRIVE
At top of mind for many…the barriers that just won’t seem to go away. Here is the skinny: Following the sinkhole near the skate park weeks before July 4th, the city put up barriers as a precaution after engineers identified areas needing further analysis.
To remove the barriers, either repairs must be completed, or confirmation that the area is safe is required. The city is currently assessing the necessary repairs between 7th and 9th Streets and will soon analyze the area near the Monarch site. Ironstate/Applied is also in process of evaluating the walkway between 12th Street and the Monarch site. I spoke with engineers onsite this morning near the Shipyard dog park, and they are cautiously optimistic the barriers can come down in the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed. More to come…
FOOD DELIVERY EBIKES – SURVEY RESULTS & PROGRESS
SURVEY RESULTS
Thank you to the 176 people who responded to my two-question survey last month, sharing your views on how well (or not) the administration and public safety are addressing concerns about reckless e-bike riding and offering ideas on what we can do better. The results were not surprising - over 75% of respondents were dissatisfied with the city’s performance on this top quality of life issue:
Out of 18 choices, it also wasn’t a surprise that the top three suggestions by far were all about requesting more enforcement from HPD. But you can see that overall people supported many of these great ideas:
Additionally, 32 people shared even more great ideas. One notable suggestion, supported by 14 respondents, was to limit the number of commercial e-delivery riders allowed in Hoboken. Your feedback has been incredibly helpful (#morevoicesarebetter) and we are already seeing movement around some...
PROGRESS HAPPENING
A big shout-out to 1st Ward Councilman Paul Presinzano. He has been steadfast in his efforts to bring education, visibility, and enforcement to the issue to tackle the growing public safety crisis caused by the reckless riding of food delivery workers on e-bikes. And it’s finally working! A picture speaks a thousand words:
On Sunday, I saw this food delivery worker on an e-bike at a red light on Washington St. I was so proud that I shouted, "Thank you!" as he rode by (though he probably had no idea why). This progress is thanks to Paul's ongoing communication with workers and the stepped up efforts by Hoboken Police to issue more warnings and violations - just after my survey went out. Coincidence or not, we’re all glad to see more police out there enforcing our laws.
So far, approximately 300 delivery workers have registered with the city, but there are likely many more out there. You might be wondering why you’re not seeing more vests (a question I get asked frequently). Unfortunately, Team Bhalla, which has resisted these efforts, initially ordered only around 30 vests, so they quickly ran out. Hopefully, more will arrive soon!
I am proud to be one of four other City Councilmembers (in addition to Paul) who supported this effort and voted yes on the "Test and Vest" ordinance:
Crazy that certain Councilmembers chose petty politics over people and voted against (aka 'nay') on this critical quality of life issue, right?…
UPCOMING EDUCATION SESSION ON RODENT MITIGATION
While there are still significant rat issues in parts of the city, overall feedback suggests that the Lid ordinance and our City Health Department’s efforts are making a difference. The “Rat Pack” was organized at the request and advocacy of a group of residents, and now includes neighbors, city officials, and a few electeds, all working together to improve the city’s response.
On August 26th, the City is hosting an educational session on Rodent Control Mitigation, and I hope you can attend.
I can vouch for the increased coordination of the city’s efforts to visit problem areas, work with neighbors, and issue warnings and violations as needed. If you have a specific location that’s still a concern, please contact our health department at [email protected].
UNCLAIMED PROPERTY – IT WORKED FOR ME!
I have to give a shout out to my friend and neighbor Amy Frank Goldman, highlighted in this Hoboken Girl article “7 Websites to Find Lost Money in Your Bank Accounts, According to a Hoboken Financial Expert”. In the article, she lists five websites for states where you can search for unclaimed accounts. I searched NJ and NY, and to my surprise, I was told they found more than I would have expected in NJ (none in NY) and that I would receive the check within three weeks. Voila…three weeks later this came in the mail.
I had to share. The states may request identification and a claim form, but your ROI (return on investment) could be handsome for the moments spent. These are all state-managed websites, as identified by the suffixes of the websites.
There is even more, but will leave with you to read the article. Which is clearly worth reading and also it is worth spending the five minutes on each site above. You never know! Thank you Amy!!!
LOOKING FOR HOUSES – HOBOKEN MUSEUM HOUSE TOUR
Are you proud of your home, or some of the rooms in your home, and would like to show it to and share it with others? The Hoboken Historical Museum is seeking submissions for its 2024 Hoboken House Tour (on my birthday Oct. 27th). If you are interested in participating, please contact Victoria Moyeno, Development Manager as soon as possible. They are looking for homes throughout the city with historic value or notably beautiful in their architectural and interior design which can include condos, freestanding houses, etc. Please note that they cannot be for sale (unless it's truly spectacular). For consideration, kindly email a few photos of your space to [email protected].
HOBOKEN SAILING CLUB – NEW SAILBOAT TOURS
There is a recent addition to the Hoboken Sailing Club – the gorgeous Sappho. You can book sailing tours on it right from our Hoboken uptown waterfront including a 2 hour Sunset Cruise for 6, a 2 hour City Lights Cruise for 6, or a private hourly tour for up to 10 people. I haven’t done this yet, but I plan to. You can learn more here: Sappho Sailing Tours - Scenic, sightseeing fun sailing on the Hudson River . If you want to learn more about the Hoboken Sailing Club (you don’t need a boat to be a member), click here: Why Join the Hoboken Sailing Club? — Hoboken Sailing Club
I have other updates to share as well including a July 4th de-brief and survey results but those will have to wait for now. As always, please share this with everyone you know who may be interested and reach out any time on any issue important to you: 201-208-1764 or [email protected].
