HOW TO HELP AFTER HURRICANE HELENE

Many of you have reached out, asking how you can help those impacted by Hurricane Helene. For a an incredible, comprehensive list of charities supporting the relief efforts, please visit this site: Charity Navigator: Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts.  I am sure you will find a way that resonates with how you want to help.

I also wanted to pass along a touching way to help that’s close to home, in an area where my cousin has lost everything. French Broad Chocolates, based in Asheville NC, one of the hardest hit areas, is owned by a dear friend of a good friend from high school. Their business was hit hard by the flooding, but they still have chocolate inventory available for purchase that they are looking to sell to raise funds for their recovery efforts. If you’re a fan of chocolate, in need of a holiday gift or just want to support a small business, this is a sweet way to help them rebuild. You can visit their website at French Broad Chocolates to support them during this difficult time.  I have already ordered their Cinnamon Hot Chocolate and Dark Chocolate covered hazelnuts. #winwin

The owners also highlighted two local organizations doing important work on the ground in Asheville:
Thank you for your kindness and generosity in helping those in need.

ROAD CLOSED AHEAD: MAKING DRIVING A LITTLE EASIER

As a quick follow-up to last week’s exciting detour sign update, I’m happy to share that the new "Road Closed Ahead" signs I ordered have arrived and will soon be put to good use by our OEM Director, Kevin Cruz, and his team. In the meantime, you may have noticed more signs going up a full block ahead of closures, giving drivers a heads-up and, more importantly, a choice of how to navigate.

Hoboken’s one-way streets can make detours challenging, but this small improvement is already making a big difference. I’m grateful to Kevin and his team for embracing this change and working quickly to ensure smoother traffic flow during street closures.

We’re continuing to make progress, one sign at a time.

DID YOU KNOW? APPLE STORE AT AMERICAN DREAM MALL

Did you know there’s an Apple Store in the American Dream mall in Secaucus? I didn’t until recently! For those of us who don’t want to trek into the city or drive out to Garden State Plaza in Paramus, this is another great option. If you’re in need of an Apple fix, check out the map and parking info here. You can also hop on the 85/American Dream bus directly from our Hoboken Terminal—check out the schedule here!  Or take a train to Secaucus and a 10 minute tax / rideshare.  Easy Peasy.

CRANE IN THE RIVER: WHAT’S HAPPENING?

If you’ve noticed the massive crane in the middle of the Hudson River across from the northern end of Hoboken, you’re seeing Phase One of the "Hudson River Ground Stabilization Project," a critical step in the larger Gateway Tunnel initiative. This crane is building a 100x1200 foot cofferdam, which will protect marine life and allow workers to remove water and create a dry area to work in the middle of the river. The purpose? To strengthen the riverbed in this area, which will eventually sit above the tunnel as it runs under the Hudson.  This part of the Gateway Tunnel project is expected to be completed in 2027.  After which excavation will begin for the tunnel itself.

This is all part of the effort to improve our region’s transportation infrastructure and make commuting in and out of the city more reliable in the long run. And for those who are curious, the workers are departing from Hoboken’s own 12th Street Pier! Learn more about the project here.

Support Hoboken’s Scouting community by attending this event later this month. The Hoboken Scouting Fund was created to make Scouting accessible to more local families, and this is a great way to contribute while enjoying an evening with friends.

A little more about Scouting in Hoboken: Scouting has long been a cornerstone of skill-building and friendship in our community, with active Cub Scout Packs, Boys Troops and Girls Troops. The newly formed Hoboken Scouting Fund was created to help make Scouting more accessible to all.  I’ve personally been involved in several Scout projects, including an environmentally focused cleanup of the Cove inlet with a future Eagle Scout and a panel on shaping tomorrow’s leaders with a future Girl Scout Gold Award recipient.

Scouting is an incredible program that develops critical skills for young men and women. You can read more about the inspiring Girl Scout Gold Award project here.

UPDATED PARKING RESTRICTIONS - BLOOMFIELD BETWEEN 14TH & 15TH

After a lot of input from neighbors, and discussions with the surrounding schools, we have been able to adjust the parking restrictions on Bloomfield St. between 14th and 15th to better fit with the needs of all stakeholders in the neighborhood.  Effective a few days ago, the parking restrictions are now tailored more specifically to the drop off / pick up times, and end earlier in the evening.

OCTOBER 7TH: A TRAGIC ANNIVERSARY

Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of a horrific tragedy.  Like America’s 9/11 when al Qaeda terrorists came to fulfill their mission to destroy us, Oct 7th was the day Hamas, a terrorist organization, came to destroy Israel.  1,200 people were savagely killed—executed, burned, raped, mutilated, and beheaded—including 46 Americans. In addition, 256 people were kidnapped, with 101 still held hostage, including 7 Americans.  If you have not seen footage from that day, I encourage you to read this thread on X, including the 40 minute video of the horrific acts that happened that day.  It is a devastating reminder of how this started. Who Hamas is. And the reason Israel fights.

Earlier this year, I was humbled to meet one of the hostages who was released in November. The cousin of a friend.  She had been at the Nova festival, dancing at dawn to watch the sunrise. Her account of what she saw and endured that day has never left my mind. Twice she managed to escape, but they broke her leg to stop her from trying a third time. She was held with an 11-year-old girl until they were separated upon her release, living each day under the threat of death and told she would never be rescued.

I hate what has followed just as much as anyone—the ongoing violence has led to the loss of so many innocent lives. And as we watch the conflict continue to escalate, I, like so many, am uncertain about the path to peace. But I cannot lose sight of how this all began—one year ago, with a terrorist attack that shattered lives. We need to bring the hostages home. And we need to pray for peace and an end to the loss of innocent life.

Our Uniting for Harris-Walz 2024 Hoboken group has been busy! We’ve now written 5,000 postcards to PA across eight events, thanks to around 75 amazing volunteers. Next up: group phone banking tonight (Tuesday) and a stamping / mix and mingle party this Thursday to put stamps on 5,000 cards and get energized for making calls and knocking on doors in PA (we’re planning a door-knocking trip to Pennsylvania on October 13th).  I know not everyone supports this ticket, but if you do, you're welcome to join us!

As always, please share this with everyone you know who may be interested and reach out any time on any issue important to you: 201-208-1764 or [email protected].
