#57 Happy Thanksgiving! A hero among us....

Thanksgiving is a special holiday, as it is the one that all Americans celebrate, regardless of faith or background.

And although it is tied to our nation’s history, what makes it so special is that it has become a day centered around gratitude and the communities that we hold dear – family, friends and the people who make our lives meaningful.

This year I can't stop thinking about a book by Eleanor Porter (and a Disney movie) called Pollyanna.  I first heard about it early in my career in investment banking, when one of my bosses nicknamed me “Pollyanna” (it was 1994). Curious, I read the book, and the story left a lasting impression. Pollyanna is known for her "glad game," a philosophy of finding something to be glad about in every situation, no matter how challenging. Her positive outlook inspires kindness, gratitude, and a sense of community, gradually transforming the lives of everyone around her. I took being called Pollyanna as a compliment, even though it may not have been given that way at the time.

Many we know are experiencing challenges this year as we gather for Thanksgiving.  But I am so hopeful that we can all find the silver linings, glimmers of hope and love, and reasons to be glad and thankful.  I personally am glad (aka eternally thankful) for my loving family and furries, a community of close friends, the opportunity to serve and be a part of this amazing Hoboken community where I am so proud to call home, and for all those who put their lives on the line to protect us—here in our community and around the world.

I want to once again highlight our own local Thanksgiving hero, Mario Albunia, owner of Mario’s Pizza at 8th and Garden, and his family.  A tradition he has continued for over two decades and once again, Mario’s is giving free Thanksgiving Dinner to anyone who wants one.

Last year he gave away 300 turkey dinners with all the fixings to neighbors and students who don’t have family in the area, those who don’t have the means and those who want to just hang out with Mario’s family.  If you don’t have plans, join his “family” between 11am and 7pm.  And even if you will be sitting for dinner somewhere else, on your walk home or walk there, stop in and thank him.  Mario is the best of the best and is the true meaning of what Thanksgiving is about.  #angelsamongus #notallheroeswearcapes

This Thanksgiving, I’ll be at my father’s home, joined by 13 friends and family members. I am especially thankful that we continue the tradition my parents began: a gathering filled with love, laughter, and good food. My mother left big shoes to fill, but my father, sister, and I—with help from all who attend—work hard to keep her legacy alive. Every year, we retell a favorite Fisher Thanksgiving story about the time my cousin Elaine tried to cut into a decorative candle shaped like a can of cranberry sauce, thinking it was the real deal. It gets a laugh every time.

May your home and heart be filled with love, laughter, gratitude, hope, and a sense of giving to those who need it most. From my family to yours—and especially to those with an empty chair at the table this year—I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.
