Monday Post Blizzard Watch

The snowing seems to have ended...

... it is beautiful out, people and dogs are out enjoying the snow, and the salted surfaces are doing their thing.

The city has indicated that they will probably not start inspecting sidewalks until tomorrow morning at 9am.  If you have the ability, I would encourage you to get out there now - before it gets colder overnight to shovel.  Whether it is your sidewalk or shoveling out your car.  I just went for a walk and spoke with several neighbors who are already shoveling as they know that this wet snow will turn to ice overnight and make it even more difficult to shovel in the morning.  Get out there while the gettin’ good as they say.

What you need to know:

  • Sidewalk snow removal is required 6 hours after the storm ends.  I am told enforcement will begin at 9am tomorrow.

  • There is no trash OR recycling pick up tonight.  DO NOT move your trash or recycling to the curb.

  • Walking surfaces are extremely dangerous due to the weight of the snow.

    • It is the perfect conditions for salt to be effective, so if you control a sidewalk, please put salt out.

    • It is the kind of snow that sticks to your soles.  Walk slowly, and like a duck, to avoid slipping and falling.

  • The City Council meeting at 7pm Monday night will be moved to virtual.  You can watch / join via zoom or watch via Hoboken’s YouTube page.

  • Because of the state of emergency, no parking is allowed on the following Emergency Snow Routes.  Vehicles left on these streets during the state of emergency may be ticketed and towed.

    • Washington Street: Both Sides

    • 3rd Street: North Side; Jackson to River

    • 4th Street:  South Side; River to Jackson

    • 5th Street: South Side; Clinton to River

    • 9th Street: North Side; Jackson to Castle Point Terrace

    • 13th Street: North Side; Washington to Madison

    • 13th Street: South Side; Washington Street to Hudson

    • Willow: West Side; Observer Highway to 11th (County Road)

    • Observer Highway: Both Sides; Henderson to Hudson (County Road)

    • Please also note that temporary no parking signs are posted on the east side of Grand Street between Third and Eighth Streets, and vehicles must be moved from this area as well.

  • Street sweeping is suspended Tuesday.

  • Hoboken public schools are closed tomorrow including the Hoboken Public School District, HOLA, Elysian Charter and Hoboken Charter.  For others check with your provider.

  • If you see a downed tree or limb, report it to the Hoboken Fire Department at (201) 420-2004.   I reported a limb down and hanging on a wire at 12:24 today and they had it  removed - not kidding - by 12:41. FTW!

  • If a tree or limb was removed and is on your property, please set it aside - the city will have DPW pick them all up after they deal with the current blizzard.

  • How can I volunteer if I don’t have a shovel… As your neighbors / friends if they have one you can borrow.  If you have one to lend jump on social media and let people know.

  • What is happening with trash and recycling.  Per above, it is suspended for tonight altogether - so do not move it to the curb.
